Application and admission to upper secondary school
Is it time to choose your upper secondary programme and school? This page provides information on the application and admission process. Keep in mind that you can get support from a study and vocational guidance counsellor, so that you feel confident about your choice.
How to apply
- Decide which programmes, orientations and schools you want to apply to.
- Choose several programmes and schools. This will give you a better chance of being admitted to one of them. If there is a lot of competition for places, it is a good idea to have several options and not just limit yourself to your first or second choice.
- Log in to the upper secondary school admissions website of your municipality to fill in your upper secondary school choices. If you go to one of the country's compulsory schools, the password will be sent to you or given to you at school. If you are not sure which admissions office applies to you, you can find them all on the website skolverket.se.
Admissions offices, skolverket.se - Rank your choices. Enter your top choice of programme and school first. Then enter your second choice of programme and school, and so on. It is a good idea to list several choices.
- Once you have made the choices you want to make, sign your application and send it in. If you are not sure how to do this, contact your admissions office.
If you have lost your password or did not receive one
If you have lost your password, you can contact the admissions office in your home municipality to get a new one. The study and vocational guidance counsellor at your school can often help you as well.
If you are not in compulsory school, you will not automatically receive a password. In such a case, you can contact your home municipality or contact the upper secondary school admissions office directly to get a password.
Upper secondary school application period
When upper secondary schools accept applications depends on where you live in Sweden. The application period usually opens in the beginning of January and closes sometime in February. You apply to upper secondary school in a two-step process. The first step is a preliminary admission decision. This decision is not final. The preliminary decision is usually sent out in March.
How round two of the selection process works
Your preliminary admission decision will indicate where you stand in terms of being admitted to one of your choices. You are now given the opportunity to make changes to your application, for example, if it looks like you will not be admitted to one of your choices or if you want to choose a different option.
You can make changes to your application from about mid-April to mid-May. You can add choices, remove choices or change your ranking of schools.
If everything looks good and you are satisfied with your choices, you do not have to do anything at all.
The deadline to apply for your upper secondary choice
The deadline for submitting your upper secondary school choice varies from one school to another. Find out what applies at your school(s) of choice. Unless otherwise stated, sign your application and hand it in to your school's study and vocational guidance counsellor. If you are not attending a school, send your application to your home municipality.
How the admission process works
Being accepted into the upper secondary programme you have chosen depends on factors such as
- how many pupils applied for the same programme as you
- how many places are open in the programme
- your final grades when you completed compulsory school.
If there are more applicants for a programme at a school than there are places, the pupils with the best merit rating will be admitted. Your final grades are sent to the municipality's admissions office automatically.
If you are admitted to your first choice, all other choices below it are dropped. If you are admitted to your second choice or something below this, you will be put on a waiting list for the choices above it and will be removed from the choices below the one you were admitted to. In other words, you cannot be admitted to more than one programme or school.
You then receive your admission decision
You will receive your admission decision sometime between the Midsummer holiday and mid-July.
