Certified Upper Secondary School Engineer
Engelska (ENG)
After completing the Technology and Engineering Programme, you can take an additional year of studies to become a certified upper secondary school engineer. This programme combines school-based teaching with workplace-based learning, and offers good job opportunities immediately after completion.
An engineer is trained to solve problems. The job duties of a certified upper secondary school engineer can differ, but some possible jobs are project manager, production technician, designer and supervisor.
The programme has four profiles:
- Design and Product Development
- Information Technology
- Production Engineering
- Civil Engineering
The profiles are based on the orientations of the Technology and Engineering Programme. All pupils take the course “Certified Upper Secondary School Engineer in Practice” and carry out a diploma project.
How the programme is structured
During the programme, students alternate between school-based work and workplace-based learning. The programme is a collaboration between the school and the business community. This further education programme includes at least 10 weeks of workplace-based learning (arbetsplatsförlagt lärande, APL) to prepare students for the role of engineer. Pupils will be given the opportunity to develop engineering skills using, among other things, the internationally recognised CDIO model, where pupils have to think of solutions to real problems, create a solution, implement it and then manage the solution.
A local programme council is linked to the programme to ensure that the training is relevant and leads to skills in demand in the job market.
Diploma goals
The diploma goals describe what you should be capable of doing when you graduate from a particular upper secondary school programme.

Qualification for the Certified Upper Secondary School Engineer Programme
You qualify to apply for the Certified Upper Secondary School Engineer Programme if you have an upper secondary diploma from the Technology and Engineering Programme or an equivalent qualification. Your upper secondary diploma must include a programme-specific subject in your chosen field. Which programme-specific subject is acceptable depends on which profile you choose. If you choose the profile that corresponds to the Technology and Engineering Programme's orientation, the programme-specific subject is compulsory in your upper secondary diploma. If you have chosen the Engineering Science orientation or you choose a different profile than Years Two and Three, you need to make sure that you have the right programme-specific subject.
Age limit
It is possible to take an approved leave from studies before starting the further education programme as a fourth year, but you must start the programme no later than the calendar year in which you turn 22.
Financing
If you are age 20 or older, you are eligible for student finance from the Swedish Board of Student Finance (CSN). Before the age of 20, you will receive study allowance.

Application to the programme
The Certified Upper Secondary School Engineer Programme is a nationwide recruitment programme, which means that you can study anywhere in the country. This means you can continue in your chosen profile even if it is not offered in your home municipality.
Whichever school you apply to, you should submit an application to the municipality where you live. Your home municipality will forward your application to the appropriate school organiser.
