About introductory programmes
Introductory programmes are an opportunity for anyone who is not qualified for a national programme to progress in their education or prepare for working life. There are four programmes with different orientations
There are four different introductory programmes:
- Programme-oriented option
- Vocational introduction
- Individual alternative
- Language introduction
To help you decide which introductory programme is best for you, you can talk to a study and vocational guidance counsellor at your school.
What you will learn in the Introductory Programme
The programme is full-time, and the content of the programme is determined by your educational goals, needs and interests. All pupils on an introductory programme create an individual study plan together with those responsible for the programme. This plan describes your programme and your goals for it. Most introductory programmes last between one and three years.
Upper secondary school certificate from an introductory programme
Once you have completed your education on an introductory programme, you will receive an upper secondary school certificate showing the programme objectives, all the grades you earned, and other activities that were part of your programme.
If you discontinued your studies or did not achieve the programme objectives, you will instead receive a listing of the parts of the programme you successfully completed.
Programme-oriented option – if you want to qualify for a national programme
The programme-oriented option is for individuals who want a programme geared towards a specific national programme. The aim is for you to be admitted to the national programme as soon as possible. The national programme that the education is geared towards can be a vocational programme or a higher education preparatory programme.
If you are qualified for the programme-oriented option, the school must offer it.
To qualify for a programme-oriented option, you must have a passing grade in
- Swedish or Swedish as a second language
- Mathematics
- English
- Three other subjects.
Or you need a passing grade in
- Swedish or Swedish as a second language
- Mathematics or English
- Four other subjects.
Vocational introduction – if you want a vocation-oriented education
Vocational introduction is for individuals who want a vocation-oriented education but do not qualify for any vocational programme or for the programme-oriented option.
Vocational introduction is intended to prepare you to get a job or be able to apply for a vocational programme at upper secondary school or at komvux adult education. The programme may include (for example):
- Compulsory school subjects for which you do not have a passing grade
- Subjects from a vocational programme
- Workplace-based learning (arbetsplatsförlagt lärande, APL) or placement
- Other measures that you need to develop your knowledge and skill level.
After the programme, you can seek work or continue your studies in a national vocational programme or komvux adult education.
Individual alternative – if you lack a passing grade in one or more subjects
The individual alternative is for individuals who lack one or more passing grades required to be admitted to a national vocational programme.
The programme may, for example, include compulsory school subjects for which you do not have a passing grade, parts of a national programme, and other measures that you need. The programme is intended to result in you being able to continue your studies in a vocational introduction course, be admitted to another programme, or prepare for working life.
Language introduction – if you need to study Swedish and lack qualification
Language introduction is for individuals who are new to Sweden and need an education with an emphasis on the Swedish language and lack the passing grades required to be admitted to a national programme.
The programme includes teaching in Swedish or Swedish as a second language, as well as other subjects that you have not passed but are needed to continue in your studies. These may be compulsory school subjects, parts of a national programme and other measures that you need. After the programme, you can continue your studies in upper secondary school, komvux adult education or some other programme.
