What you will learn in the Hairdresser and Stylist Programme
In the Hairdresser and Stylist Programme, you will learn to create hairstyles and apply make-up on clients and models, from the idea stage to the finished result. You will train in different techniques and treatments to be able to design hairstyles, beards and make-up for different occasions or purposes. You will learn about service, technical skills, style, colour and shape. You will develop your ability to communicate with clients or models to better understand and fulfil their wishes, including assessing which techniques and products you need for the job. You will also learn how to calculate whether a treatment or product will be financially viable or not.
When I applied to the hairdresser programme, I thought it was just colouring and cutting hair, but it's so much more! There are techniques and a lot of other different things involved.

Hairdresser

The orientation gives you the opportunity to work as a hairdresser trainee, for example, so you can later take the hairdresser's journeyman test.
Hairstylist and make-up artist

You will also learn about different products and tools needed for different occasions or varied themes. This orientation prepares you to seek jobs in the hair and make-up industry's specialist trade or as a hair and make-up artist.
Diploma project
At the end of the Hairdresser and Stylist Programme, you will carry out a diploma project. This project is intended to enable you to demonstrate that you have the knowledge needed to start working in the field you trained in.
Workplace-based learning
Parts of the programme take place at one or more workplaces for at least 15 weeks. This is known as workplace-based learning (arbetsplatsförlagt lärande, APL). This is an important element of the programme. APL gives you the opportunity to practice different treatments and apply the knowledge that you may have only learned in theory in school. You will meet new people, both clients and colleagues. It gives you real-life work experience and contacts you can use when looking for a job.
The orientation you choose affects where you can do your APL. For example, with the barber orientation, you can do your APL in a barber shop. With the hairdresser orientation, you can do your APL in a hair salon or the like. With the hairstylist and make-up artist orientation, you can do your APL in a shop that sells beauty products, with a make-up artist or at a theatre.
Apprenticeship education
If the school offers upper secondary apprenticeship education within the programme, you can choose this. This means that you gain the same knowledge, but spend at least half of the programme based at one or more workplaces.
