VOCATIONAL PROGRAMME LEADING TO PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION

Hotel and Tourism Programme

Do you like when there is a lot going on all around you? Do you like working with people, and are you interested in languages, travel and other cultures? Then the Hotel and Tourism Programme could be for you. This programme is designed for anyone who wants to work in the hospitality industry in tourism, travel, hotels, meetings and events.

Video: This video provides a brief description of the Hotel and Tourism Programme (time: 4:40 min)

What you will learn in the Hotel and Tourism Programme

Hospitality and tourism is one of the world's fastest-growing industries. In the Hotel and Tourism Programme, you will learn about the hospitality industry, i.e. the industry that ties together everything that has to do with tourism, travel, hotels, and meetings and events.

Working in the hospitality and tourism industry involves many varied tasks – everything from receiving guests, customers and visitors, using different booking systems to booking or organising and carrying out different types of meetings and events, activities and experiences.

You will develop your interpersonal skills and build a professional relationship with guests, customers and visitors. You will learn to seek, analyse and evaluate information, and to take responsibility and exercise good judgement.

You will learn about good hospitality, service and interpersonal relations, communication, marketing, sales, business enterprise, languages, travel and destinations. You will also learn about planning, organisation, management and finance, as well as people's needs, traditions and service expectations.

You will learn about tourism, travel, hotels, and meetings and events, both national and international.

You will learn about the hospitality industry, both historically and about future opportunities. You will also learn about sustainable development in tourism and about the laws and regulations that exist.

I chose the Hotel and Tourism Programme because it prepares you for working life, so it will be easier for me to find a job when I finish upper secondary school. It was also very interesting to learn more about hotels and tourism; you gain broad knowledge about all sorts of things. I think it's been a fun programme, as we've been on lots of study visits to different places.

Orientations

The Hotel and Tourism Programme does not have any orientations.

Diploma project

At the end of the Hotel and Tourism Programme, you will carry out a diploma project in your chosen professional field. Through this project, you will demonstrate that you have the knowledge required to start working in your chosen field.

Workplace-based learning

Parts of the programme take place at one or more workplaces for at least 15 weeks. This is known as workplace-based learning (arbetsplatsförlagt lärande, APL). This is an important element of the programme. APL gives you the opportunity to use the knowledge you gained through school and put it into practice. It gives you work experience and contacts you can use when looking for a job.

You can do APL in many types of workplaces within the Hotel and Tourism Programme. For example, your placement can be in a more traditional workplace, like a hotel, conference centre or ski resort. Your APL could also be more directly focused on the tourism element, such as placement as an activity leader in a high heights course, in an event organisation or at a theme park. There may also be opportunities to do your APL abroad.

Apprenticeship education

If the school offers upper secondary apprenticeship education within the programme, you can choose this. This means that you gain the same knowledge, but spend at least half of the programme based at one or more workplaces.
